Hausboote prägen das Bild der Amsterdamer Grachten, etwa an der Prinsengracht. Einige wirken wie schwimmende Gärten – üppig bepflanzt und mit Topfpflanzen bestückt (in dem grünen Durcheinander lässt sich sicher leicht das ein oder andere Pflänzlein verstecken). Auch hier prägt wieder das private Grün den öffentlichen Raum und trägt entscheidend bei zum Charme der Altstadt mit seinem Grachtengürtel. Wer Lust hat, selbst auf einem Hausboot zu übernachten, findet viele Angebote – etwa auf der Stadtmarketingseite von Amsterdam Iamsterdam oder direkt bei Hotelanbietern, die sich auf Hausboote spezialisiert haben.
Lange Zeit waren die Wohnboote eine günstige Alternative zum Wohnen, denn behördliche Regeln und steuerliche Abgaben existierten kaum oder gar nicht. Ein Paradies für Nonkonforme und solche, die davon träumen. Ursprünglich lebten hier aber ehemalige Binnenschiffer auf ihren alten Kähnen, die großteils nicht mehr fahrtauglich waren.
So romantisch es ausschaut, ein Umweltproblem bergen die Hausboote dennoch. Im Jahr 2013 waren gerade mal 40 % der Wohnboote an das Klärsystem der Stadt angeschlossen – die restlichen verklappten ihr Abwasser direkt in die Grachten. Das soll sich nun nach und nach ändern – vielleicht kann man dann bald in den Grachten baden?
